Residency: 1 – 11 June 2021
Exhibition: Iconic Land and Seascapes, 1 – 7 July 2021
British artist David Downes has been invited by Britten Pears Arts to work in residence at Snape Maltings during an exciting period when the first concerts in a vibrant Summer at Snape programme will be taking place. The residency will be followed by an exhibition of more than 40 local land and seascape paintings by Downes.
The centre piece of the exhibition will be a large painting of the iconic Snape Maltings Concert Hall, which Downes’ will create on site during his residency.
David Downes is a landscape painter who amplifies the sense of place and time through the lens of autism.
David Downes says:
“I am a landscape painter and like to paint from my imagination, so when in the midst of the first lockdown, Britten Pears Arts, gave me the chance to paint in nature, in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, I jumped at the opportunity. I visited Snape Maltings as a young boy, and the place holds a very important place in my childhood memories.”
Estelle Lovatt, FRSA says:
“A visionary outsider, Downes’ no-nonsense punchy panoramas offer more than traditional picturesque scenic geography; they are Hitchcockian. His art is my safe comfortable go-to place from where to contemplate today’s world. To explore and survey the challenging impact it has on each and every one of us.”
Harry Young of Britten Pears Arts says:
“We are delighted to be able to offer the distinguished local artist David Downes the opportunity to immerse himself in the glorious Suffolk landscape and in the excitement of a busy Summer at Snape concert series. We look forward to seeing what he creates over the residency and to sharing his work with our visitors in an exhibition of his striking paintings.”
Downes will be giving talks about his art and living with autism at 3pm on 3 and 4 July in the Pond Gallery.
